Using imageX to restore a .wim image from a USB/DVD

This guide is to recover a windows image(.wim) from a recovery partition that has been previously saved/stored on a USB key/drive or DVD, using windows tool imagex with a Vista/Win7 install DVD.

I will be using a Dell Recovery Partition as a reference but this works with any .win image. make sure the tools folder with the imagex tool is included while saving the .wim image to a USB or burning a DVD with the image for storage.

Tools:

  1.  Windows Vista/Win7 install DVD.
  2. Recovery Partition saved with imagex tool onto a USB Key/Drive or DVD.

 Step1: Format the Drive.

  1. take the Vista/Win7 installation DVD and insert it into the drive, then boot from it. at this point you can use CMD to fire up Diskpart to format the drive or if you are not familiar with command prompt(CMD), then do as if you would be installing vista.

      a. select advance from the drive selection screen. delete the primary partition and any other partition you want to delete. then create another partition and format, once that's done you should end up with a clean c:/ partition at this point you gonna cancel the installation.

      b. boot from the DVD again this time you gonna choose the repair option, then it will try to look for a VistaWin7 installation, but wont find it. so a screen should come out with different options like recover to an early state, memory diagnostic at this point you gonna choose command prompt or CMD.

c. once CMD its open, cd(change directory) to the c:/ drive by entering cd c:/enter, or cd.. until you are at the c:/ directory. now your Dell Recovery Partition with your .wim image should be D:/ drive or replace the drive letter where the image is.

Step2: you gonna use a tool already included in the Dell Recovery Partition called IMAGEX(located in the tools folder of the Recovery Partition you have).  cd to the directory where imagex is. cd D:/Tools/imagex

now the ease part comes. you gonna use this command

D:/Tools/imagex /apply d:\Dell\image\Factory.wim 1 c:\

 thats it.

The Imagex installation should start and be done in about 10 minutes, then boot normal. if you get a message that something is missing, or the system can`t find a bootable image, then boot from the DVD again and do the start up repair option. the DVD will repair the boot problem and that's it. once is done reboot, and you should end up with a fresh clean factory installation.

you can do this from USB drive or DVD. just put all the files from the recovery partition into a USB drive or burn it to a DVD, then save it and once you need it again you can do the same.

Internet Tether with iPhone (no unlock requiered)

This guide is for iPhone owners that would like to share their Internet connection with their laptop.the blackra1n+blacksn0w hack is a pain, as this combination will make you loose connection randomly and is buggy on the iPhone 3GS at least.

1.You need a jailbroken iPhone(i will not add details on how to do this in this guide)
2.the latest iTunes revision installed.
3.The sinfuliphonerepo.com source in your installer/store of choice.

first: i assume your device is already jailbroken, so head to your installer repository management option and install the sinful iphone repo(http://sinfulliphonerepo.com/). once is installed and refreshed, then navigate to the repository inventory and install the enable tethering package. at this point; you should reboot your device and you will have the tether option in you network setting.(if not then reset network settings)

second: initiate the tether connection by plug in in your USB cable or pair your iPhone with your laptop using bluetooth. you can do this by accessing your bluetooth interface and under devices, right click on your device and choose the connect using - access point

after you done that; you can now, add a shortcut to your desktop; by rigth click on the device, and create a shortcut. the shortcut will be placed in your desktop, this will make connecting to the device faster and easy, to connect:  just right click on the device shortcut and click connect using - access point.

Update 1: shortcut part added because of a question by Rahul B. thanks for bringing that up to my attention.

Screen shot tutorials

ok so if you wonder how people make tutorial with screen shots to ilustrate the guides. its easy, you dont need to download anything, if you are using windows vista or windows 7.

all you need is something called snipping tool.
located in the accesories menu, this little tool is very powerful. allowing you take picture of your screen and save them as JPEG, GIF or PNG.

one other tool you can use with this tool is the prt sc shortcut key in the keyboard. this takes a screenshot of the entire screen. now this is useful if you need to take a screen shot of an active menu or window, cinse and active windows will disappear once you fireup snipping tool. to do this just paste by pressing ctrl+v to paint or any other program you like, then using snipping tool, you can grab that portion of the screen to make it into a picture or screen shot.

Useful

this is just a couple of shortcuts to access some of the most important tools in a windows enviroment and can be accessed by typing this shortcuts in the windows search bar in the start menu.

Device Manager = devmgmt.msc

Services = services.msc

Task Manager = taskmgr.exe or Ctrl+alt+delete

Registry Editor = regedit

System Configuration = msconfig

Command Prompt = CMD

Creating a Bootable Vista/Windows 7 USB Flash Drive.

Step 1: Format the Drive

The steps here are to use the command line to format the disk properly using the diskpart utility.
[Be warned: this will erase everything on your drive. Be careful.]

1.Plug in your USB Flash Drive

2.Open a command prompt as administrator (Right click on Start and in the search bar enter CMD, right click and  “Run as administrator”

 3.enter diskpart.exe and press enter

4.Find the drive number of your USB Drive by typing the following into the Command Prompt window:
list disk

The number of your USB drive will listed. You’ll need this for the next step. I’ll assume that the USB flash drive is disk 1.

5.Format the drive by typing the next instructions into the same window. Replace the number “1” with the number of your disk below:
select disk
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit

When that is done, you’ll have a formatted USB flash drive ready to be made bootable.

Step 2: Make the Drive Bootable

Next we’ll use the bootsect utility that comes on the Vista or Windows 7 disk to make the flash drive bootable.
1.In the same command window that you were using in Step 1, Insert your Windows Vista / 7 DVD into your drive.

2.Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:
d:
cd d:\boot

3.Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Vista/7 image. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer:
bootsect /nt60 G:

4.You can now close the command prompt window, we’re done here.

Step 3: Copy the installation DVD to the USB drive.

Use Windows explorer to copy all of the files on your DVD onto the formatted flash drive.
After you’ve copied all of the files to the disk, you are ready to go.

My background

Well I'm originaly from Panama, so my first language is Spanish, but I live in Florida. So my English can be funny, sometimes.  I like everything GADGET. Yes I'm a technology junkie and I love it. I'm an advanced computer user but no Einstein. I like helping people, but don't be pushy. I made this blog so people can find and understand different types of hacks and mods. So they can find answers for thier questions about technology and the importance of knowing how things work. Also I will make reference about products: like features, performance, hackability(lol yes I said that), specs, compare, and price. So if you would like me to review a product and is under my power to do so, then I will. Keep in mind that I'm making guides and posting hacks that might not be mine, but I  want to post them for easy find, on this blog. In case that I post/make guides that are not mine, I will post links to the original and/or give credit to user/person that originaly posted or created and if you find a guide here that you are 100% sure is yours or you helped put together or helped in any type or form. Please contact me to give credit and link the guide to the rightful owner.
I will be remaking guides that are not clear or easy to understand, and I'll try to make them with images of every step. All guides here work 100% and have been tested by me unless I  specify otherwise; in  case the guide is a request from a fellow user. Most guides will be made as picture tutorial but in some cases I will include a video tutorial too. If you have a guide you would like to share or want me to remake or a product review, please contact me, guides will be tested  and posted as soon as they are found as 100% working.
